South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI) are remarkable for their abundant wildlife and pristine wilderness, long held in high regard by those who visit.

In 2022, two Specially Protected Areas were established; the South Georgia Terrestrial Protected Area (SG TPA) and the South Sandwich Islands Terrestrial Protected Area (SSI TPA). Together they cover 3,800 km2 , the entire landmass of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, including all offshore islands to the mean high-water mark. These Terrestrial Protected Areas complement the existing Marine Protected Area, which covers the entire 1.24 million km² maritime zone. Combined, these Protected Areas exemplify holistic ecosystem management and world-class protection, coupled with sustainable use.

The rich biodiversity of SGSSI today is a testament to the sustained efforts of numerous organisations and individuals over the years. Evidence- based management and world-leading habitat restoration projects including eradication of rodents, reindeer and control of invasive plants has rolled back the clock on past human activities which have harmed the environment and re-set the ecological balance in favour of nature. Recognising these extraordinary efforts, the designation of these Protected Areas ensures that the wilderness and wonder of SGSSI will flourish for future generations to enjoy.

The SG TPA will work to conserve, protect and preserve the ecosystem and restore biodiversity. This will be achieved by ensuring that activities are managed sustainably with minimal impact on the ecosystem. Enhanced biodiversity protection will coexist with responsible research and sustainable tourism. Facilitating visits allows people to experience these incredible habitats and contribute to the collective knowledge about the island's biodiversity. The Government of SGSSI aims to provide a truly sustainable visitor experience, supporting this rare global phenomenon: an ecosystem in recovery.

Recognising the different characters, ecological pressures, and restrictions on access of Protected Areas, the overarching conservation objectives are further detailed in a comprehensive TPA Management Plan. This plan ensures that activities consistent with the conservation objectives are encouraged, while certain activities are regulated to protect the environment.

The specially commissioned artwork for these stamps celebrates the different elements of the SG TPA including wilderness and wildlife, biodiversity protection, responsible research, habitat restoration and sustainable visits.
